Designer Veronique Salagean’s passion for sewing and fashion began from an early age when she was still a child in her home country, Northern Transylvania, and over the years this fondness for fashion grew within her and she decided to travel to England to study, and that’s where she found what she was looking for – the turban, that became her world of innovation, creativity and beauty.

Sayidaty met Veronique Salagean in London and had this interview with her:

1. Do you feel that the turban is mainly for Muslim women?

No, I do not think so. It has never been and never will be. Its inception was for looking good on 1^st Century BC in Persia and because of religion interference is now associated with it. The only headwear related to religion and particularly Muslim is hijab and I think people should stick to it and leave the Turban that is fashion item and Sikhism alone.

هل ترين أن التوربان موجّه في الأساس للمرأة المسلمة؟ –

لا أتفق مع ذلك. فالعمامة النسائية أو التوربان لم ولن تكون للمرأة المسلمة فقط. لقد تم ابتكار التوربان في بلاد فارس في القرن الأول للميلاد وأعتقد أن الحجاب هو شيء مختلف تماماً وله علاقة بالدين، وربما من هنا نشأ هذا الخلط بين التوربان والحجاب، بينما في الحقيقة التوربان يرتبط أكثر بالموضة والأزياء كما أنه رمز للديانة السيخية

2. What role do you feel the turban plays in fashion and style?

From my work, the role that brings to wearer is uniqueness, experiencing the grace feeling and stand out in the crowd.

برأيك، ما هو الدور الذي يلعبه التوربان في عالم الموضة والأناقة؟ –

من واقع خبرتي، يلعب التوربان دوراً كبيراً في إضفاء نوع من التفرّد والخصوصية على مظهر المرأة إضافة إلى تجربة الشعور بالجمال والأناقة والزهو بين جموع الناس

3. What styling tips would you give to someone who wants to wear a turban?

Wear the VS Turbans in the same colour with your shoes or handbag.

ما هي نصائح الأناقة التي يمكنك منحها لمن يرغبن بارتداء التوربان؟ –

4. What is the latest trends associated with turbans?

There are no latest turban trends but headwraps added on runways, inspired from the hijab styling by young ladies around the world and this is were the society is misled.

ليست هناك صيحات جديدة بمعنى الكلمة، إلا أنني لاحظت أن تصاميم التوربان التي عرضت في أسابيع الموضة كانت مستوحاة من أسلوب الشابات المحجبات حول العالم وهذا يؤكد وجود سوء فهم في المجتمع فيما يتعلق بالتوربان

5. What recent looks on the runway have caught your attention with their use of turbans?

Of course, we go back to Gucci’s fashion show. The reproduction of Dastaar has been used for media attention and money unless they were hosting a pre Met Gala 2018.

ما هي الإطلالات الأحدث في عالم الموضة التي تم فيها استخدام التوربان والتي لفتت انتباهك؟ –

إن نظرنا إلى عرض أزياء غوتشي على سبيل المثال، حيث تم محاكاة العمامة السيخية (الدستار) نجد أن ذلك كان على الأرجح لجذب اهتمام وسائل الإعلام ولغايات الربح المادي، ما لم يكونوا ينوون استضافة حفل ميت غالا 2018

6. Where do you get your inspiration from?

I inspire from within I, where is silence, feelings or music. From how I see the four words provided from my client or myself describing a collection; shapes get formed into turbans. I envision first obsessively for two days before designing or draping.

من اين تستلهمين أفكارك؟ –

إلهامي يأتي من داخلي، من الصمت والموسيقى ومشاعري وأفكاري. ومن الكلمات الأربعة التي أطلبها من زبوناتي لوصف التصميم أو من نفسي حين أصف تشكيلة من ابتكاراتي – كل ذلك يتشكّل في النهاية إلى تصاميم توربان فريدة. وعادة ما يتشكل التصميم في ذهني وأبقى بهذا الهاجس ليومين قبل أن ابدأ بتصميم وصنع التوربان

7. What are your favourite materials to use in turbans and what makes them so good?

My favourite materials are Beaded Fabric, pure Silk and Chantilly. When draping, I add a drop of my aura where carpets will lay down and doors will open.

ماهي الخامات المفضلة لديك في صنع التوربان وما الذي يميزها؟ –

الخامات المفضلة لدي هي الأنسجة المطرزة والحرير الخالص والشانتيلي. وعند صنع أي توربان أضيف إليه لمسة من شخصيتي لخلق تحفة فنية تفرش لها الأرض وتفتح لها الأبواب

8. Why did you choose to specialise in turban design?

I always wanted to become a creator and give people something so unique from within me that they can wear. The need of creating a luxury item and not finding at that time (2014) a special turban, made me get into making my own turban line. So I got into it creating for myself and I deeply fall in love with the outcome. Shortly after, I established the VS Turbans brand.

لماذا اخترت التخصّص في تصميم التوربان؟ –

دائما ما كنت أتمنى أن اكون مبتكرة وان أقدم للمرأة قطعة اكسسوار فريدة وبديعة تحمل جزءاً مني ويمكنهن ارتداءها. وكان الحافز هو رغبتي في ابتكار قطعة فاخرة وحين لم أستطع إيجاد قطعة التوربان المميزة التي كنت أبحث عنها – كان ذلك في 2014 – قررت صنع تشكيلتي الخاصة من التوربان، وبعدها وقعت في حب ما صنعته. وبعد ذلك بفترة قصيرة قمت بتأسيس علامتي التجارية الخاصة التي تحمل اسم VS Turbans

9. Did you study the history of the turban before you began designing?

Yes, I did, because many people and at that time hat makers classmates have said repeatedly that there has never been a Turban Designer in history and that was in 2014.

نعم. وكان العديد من الأشخاص في ذلك الوقت من زملائي من مصممي القبعات يقولون مراراً وتكراراً أن التاريخ لم يشهد مصمم توربان حقيقي وكان ذلك في 2014

10. Where are your biggest customers from?

My biggest VS Ladies are from Middle East or North Africa.

من أين هي أكبر قاعدة من زبوناتك؟ –

لدي زبونات من كل أنحاء العالم وخصوصاً من الشرق الأوسط وشمال أفريقيا

11. What is the most expensive product you have designed? And what is the most unusual?

So far, the most expensive turban has had three accessories: ostrich feather, real pearls and a scarf. A Turban made during a month with 50 hours work.

The unusual turban that I have made was for my A/W collection. I stuck natural autumn leaves on the turban and small-scale white people figures and made to each of them a turban of gum, painted with nail vanish. With this I created the VS World and still have the turban.

ما هي أغلى قطعة قمت بتصميمها؟ وما هي القطعة الأغرب؟ –

أغلى قطعة صممتها حتى الآن هي توربان زينته بثلاثة أنواع من المواد هي ريش النعام واللؤلؤ الطبيعي ووشاح، وقد استغرق العمل عليه حوالي 50 ساعة

أما أغرب قطعة قمت بتصميمها فكانت ضمن تشكيلتي للخريف والشتاء وقد زينتها بأوراق أشجار حقيقية من فصل الخريف وأشكال بشرية صغيرة بيضاء صنعت لكل منهم توربان من العلكة ولونتها بطلاء الأظافر. وبالتصميم ذاته قمت بصنع VS World ولازلت أحتفظ به

12. Tell us about yourself. Where and how did you begin designing?

I start sewing for the first time when I was 6 years old because my mother kept me entertained for the whole day. Then when I moved to London at 21 after fashion short courses, I have been accepted at Central Saint Martins foundation program. I was very surprised of the acceptance as in between I done my college in Economics. I interrupted the foundation course because I already started working on my Turban Studio and I couldn’t keep with the investments. Designing the actual turban, I invented, no one taught me.

أخبرينا عن نفسك، وأين وكيف بدأت رحلتك في عالم تصميم التوربان؟ –

بدأت الخياطة لأول مرة حين كنت بعمر السادسة لأن والدتي كانت تقوم بذلك طوال اليوم. وبعد انتقالي إلى لندن في سن الحادية والعشرين والالتحاق بدورات تعليمية في الموضة والأزياء تم قبولي في البرنامج التأسيسي لجامعة سنترال سانت مارتينز، إلا أنني تركت الدراسة فيها لأنني لم أستطع الاستمرار مع عالم المال والاستثمارات، وفتحت استوديو تصميم التوربان الخاص بي وبدأت بتصميم التوربان الذي ابتكرته بنفسي دون مساعدة من أحد

13. Do you wear turbans yourself?

Yes, I do pretty often, and I love my babies VS Turbans to bits. They are absolutely everything to me; I live and breathe each of them.
